How to Redeem a Code on Xbox Series X|S (Console, Web, and App)
To redeem a code on Xbox Series X|S, press the Xbox button, open the Store, press the View button, choose Redeem, and type the 25-character code. You can also redeem at xbox.com/redeem in any browser or from the Xbox mobile app. Before you start, make sure you are signed in to the Microsoft account that should own the content.
Xbox codes are 25 letters and numbers in five blocks, like XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. That format matters, because codes for in-game currency from other publishers can look similar but are redeemed somewhere else.
Redeem a code on the console
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then select Store.
- Press the View button to open the side menu.
- Select Redeem.
- Enter the 25-character code, select Next, and follow the prompts.
If the code was for a game, it starts downloading automatically. While it installs, you can watch it under My games & apps > Manage > Queue. If you are getting ready for a big launch, our GTA 6 preload guide explains what to expect once a download is queued.
Redeem on the web or the mobile app
Not near your console? These two options put the item on your account, and your Xbox picks it up later.
| Where | Steps |
|---|---|
| Web browser | Go to xbox.com/redeem, sign in, and enter the code. |
| Xbox app (mobile) | Tap your profile picture, tap the gear icon, select Redeem code, enter the code, then select Next. |
| Xbox app (Windows) | Open the Xbox app, select your gamerpic, select Settings, then Redeem under “Redeem a code.” |
Check these things before you redeem
- Right account. Xbox Support says a redeemed code cannot be moved to another Microsoft account. If the code was a gift, the person who received it should sign in and redeem it.
- Right region. Some codes only work in one country or region. Microsoft says your account region should match where you actually live.
- Account in good standing. Some codes will not redeem if your account is suspended or has a balance due.
- Payment info prompt. You may be asked to add a payment option first. Microsoft says redeeming the code itself does not add a charge.
Codes that are not Xbox codes
Microsoft notes that codes such as Fortnite V-Bucks cards or GTA Shark Cash Cards are redeemed in the game’s own store or on the publisher’s website, not through the Xbox Redeem screen. Always read the instructions that came with the card. If you pre-ordered a game and got a bonus code, the same rule applies: follow the instructions that came with it. For what GTA 6 pre-orders include, see our GTA 6 pre-order bonus guide.
Where to find what you redeemed
Games install on their own. Add-ons appear under the game: open My games & apps > See all, highlight the game, press the View button, and look in the add-ons list. Gift card money goes to your Microsoft account balance. On the console, check it under Profile & system > Settings > Account > Payment & billing, then the Payment options tile.
FAQ
Can I redeem a code for someone else on my console?
Yes, but they must be the one signed in when the code is redeemed. Xbox Support cannot move a redeemed code to another account.
My code says it is for a different region. What now?
Some codes are locked to a country or region. If your account region does not match, the code may not work. Contact the seller for a code that works where you live.
Do I need a credit card to redeem a gift card?
You may be asked to add payment info first, but Microsoft says you will not be charged extra when the code is redeemed.
Where is the money from an Xbox gift card?
It goes to your Microsoft account balance. You can check it on the console under Payment & billing, or online under Payment options in your Microsoft account.
