GTA 6 Animals: Every Confirmed Species in Leonida So Far
Rockstar says GTA 6 has more than 170 animal species across land, water and air, including over 60 kinds of birds and more than 30 land mammals. Confirmed animals include alligators, flamingos, pelicans, manatees, sharks, whales, rays, sea turtles, jellyfish and invasive species like green iguanas. The numbers come from Game Informer’s September 29, 2026 preview, which Rockstar took part in.
The official numbers
| Group | Confirmed count |
|---|---|
| All species | More than 170 |
| Birds | More than 60 types |
| Land mammals | More than 30 |
| Fish, reptiles and others | Not given |
One outlet’s summary mentioned “over 150,” but Dexerto, HotHardware and MP1st all report “over 170,” which is the figure from the preview. Rockstar has not published a full species list.
Animals confirmed so far
Florida classics
- Alligators (Rockstar’s Grassrivers description names them the best-known danger in the mangroves)
- Flamingos
- Pelicans
- Manatees
Ocean life
- Sharks (more than one species)
- Whales
- Rays
- Turtles
- Jellyfish
MP1st and Outlook Respawn report that sea life has its own movement behavior and can be met while scuba diving.
Invasive species
HotHardware lists green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques, all well-known invasive animals in real Florida.
Seen in screenshots
- Dogs, including a long-haired German Shepherd
- Deer, in a shot of Jason approaching one with a rifle
Rare and Legendary animals
Animals are split into categories that include Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2. Legendary animals can be tracked down. HotHardware notes that “Rockstar isn’t saying which animals qualify as Legendary just yet.”
Whether this ties into full hunting with pelts and trading, like Red Dead, has not been explained. A rifle-and-deer screenshot hints at hunting, and fishing is confirmed.
How the animals look and act
Michael Kane, Rockstar’s vice president of dynamic art, said: “Florida has a diverse animal ecosystem that we wanted to faithfully include across the different biomes in Leonida.” Reported details include:
- Iridescent, bioluminescent and see-through effects
- Different feather types
- Simulated fur that gets wet and matted with dirt
Where to find wildlife
- Grassrivers: alligators and swamp life
- Leonida Keys: Rockstar places the islands near some of the country’s most beautiful and dangerous waters
- Mount Kalaga: Rockstar lists hunting and fishing among its activities
- Zoo: Dexerto reports you can visit a zoo, though its location has not been stated
What we still do not know
- The full species list, and which animals count as Legendary
- Whether animal pelts or parts can be sold, as in Red Dead Redemption 2
- Whether you can own or adopt a pet
- How police or the heat system react to harming animals
Rockstar has kept these details for launch day. Until then, treat any “full animal list” you see online as fan work, not an official reveal.
