Roblox Voice Chat: Requirements and How to Turn It On

To use Roblox voice chat, you must be 13 or older and verified. Roblox’s Help Center says you need phone number or ID verification, and since January 2026 Roblox has required an age check before any chat feature, including voice, will work. Once you qualify, turn it on in Settings > Privacy and content restrictions > Communication > Voice Chat and switch Enable Microphone on.

Roblox has changed its chat rules a lot in 2025 and 2026. This guide uses Roblox’s newest official pages as of October 2026.

How the age check works

Roblox’s age check uses Facial Age Estimation with your device’s camera in the Roblox app. Roblox says the images and video are processed by its vendor, Persona, and deleted right after. Users 13 and older can use ID verification instead. If the age estimate is wrong, you can verify with an ID, or a linked parent can update a child’s age through Parental Controls.

After the check, Roblox places users into age groups (under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21+). By default, you can chat with your own group and nearby groups. Age-checked users 13 and older can also chat with people they know through Trusted Connections.

How to turn on voice chat

1. Open Settings. In the mobile or desktop app, tap More (…), then the gear icon. On Roblox.com, select the gear icon in the upper-right corner.
2. Go to Privacy and content restrictions.
3. Select Communication.
4. Open Voice Chat and switch Enable Microphone to on. The toggle turns blue.

If you have not finished an age check, Roblox will prompt you. The chat window shows an Unlock chat button, and you can complete the check without leaving the game.

Turning it on inside a game

Roblox says verified users 13 and older can also turn on voice chat inside a game that supports it. You will need to agree to voice recording for safety and moderation, and you may need to allow microphone access on your device.

Console players: Roblox says you must turn on voice chat using the mobile app, desktop app, or Roblox.com, not from the console itself.

Muting and turning it off

• You can switch voice chat off any time with the same toggle.
• You can mute and unmute your mic on your device or inside a game.
• Breaking Roblox’s Terms of Use or Community Standards can lead to losing voice chat or further account action.

For parents

Roblox says it does not encrypt chat and uses AI to monitor voice and text for harm. A linked parent account can manage chat settings, including who can voice chat with your child with friends (trusted friends or no one). Roblox Kids accounts (ages 5 to 8) have all chat off by default. To link a parent account, have your child go to Settings > Parental Controls > Add parent.

Voice chat is great for teaming up in party games. Just remember that real game codes, like those on our Fake An Egg codes page, never need someone to ask for your password over voice.
