PS5 vs PS5 Slim vs PS5 Pro: What Matters for GTA 6
All three consoles will run GTA 6, since it’s a PS5 game. The practical differences are storage, the disc drive, and graphics extras. The original PS5 has an 825 GB SSD, the PS5 Slim has 1 TB, and the PS5 Pro has 2 TB but no disc drive in the box. Rockstar hasn’t announced GTA 6’s PS5 or PS5 Pro modes, so we won’t guess at frame rates.
Side-by-side comparison
| Feature | PS5 (original) | PS5 Slim | PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model group | CFI-1000 | CFI-2000 | CFI-7000 |
| Built-in SSD | 825 GB | 1 TB | 2 TB |
| Disc drive | Built in (Digital Edition has none) | Attachable; included on the disc model, sold separately for Digital Edition | None included; disc drive sold separately |
| M.2 SSD slot | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Pro-only features | No | No | PSSR upscaling and advanced ray tracing in games enhanced for PS5 Pro |
Usable space on each is lower than the listed size, because part of the SSD is reserved for the system.
Storage: the biggest real-world difference
GTA 6 is expected to be about 210 GB on PS5, based on unofficial PlayStation Store backend data (details in our GTA 6 file size guide). On an 825 GB original PS5, that’s a big share of your usable space. On a 1 TB Slim, it’s still large. The Pro’s 2 TB gives the most room before you need to delete anything.
Every model has an M.2 slot, so storage is the easiest gap to close. Sony’s requirements are a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe drive from 250 GB to 8 TB with a heatsink, and a read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster is recommended.
Disc drive: matters if you buy physical
- Original PS5 disc model and PS5 Slim disc model: Play discs out of the box.
- PS5 Slim Digital Edition: Sony says you can add the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive later. It’s sold separately.
- PS5 Pro: Sony calls it “an all-digital console with no disc drive.” The disc drive and vertical stand are sold separately.
- Original PS5 Digital Edition: Has no disc drive. Sony’s 2023 announcement of the attachable drive ties it to the new Digital Edition, so don’t assume the original digital model can use it.

Graphics: what the Pro adds
Sony lists PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and advanced ray tracing as PS5 Pro features, but notes they’re “only available on select PS5 games that have been enhanced for PS5 Pro.” Whether GTA 6 gets a PS5 Pro enhancement and what it would look like hasn’t been officially detailed. Don’t buy a Pro based on rumored modes.
Which one should you get?
- Already own a PS5 or Slim: Add an M.2 SSD if space is tight. You don’t need a new console to play.
- Buying new and want discs: The PS5 Slim disc model is the simplest choice.
- Want the most storage and best visuals in enhanced games: The PS5 Pro, but budget for the disc drive if you buy physical games.
