GTA 6 Physical Edition Has No Disc: What You Actually Get in the Box

If you were planning to buy a boxed copy of GTA 6, know this first: there is no disc in the box. Rockstar confirmed that physical versions of GTA 6 “contain a download code inside the box”. You still get a case to put on your shelf, but the game itself has to be downloaded, just like the digital version.

What is inside the GTA 6 box?

• A download code for GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S
• The physical case and cover art
• The Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus, while supplies last (check your retailer)

There is no game disc. Rockstar has not announced a disc version for launch.

When do physical copies arrive?

Boxed copies are available from November 12, 2026, a week before launch. Rockstar timed this so physical buyers can redeem their code and pre-load at the same time as digital buyers. The game still unlocks on November 19.

Why no disc?

Rockstar has not given a reason. Two likely factors:

• Size: GTA 6 is reported at around 210 GB on PS5, which is more than a standard PS5 disc holds (about 100 GB).
• Leaks: discs that reach shops early are a common source of story leaks before launch. Codes delivered on a fixed date reduce that risk.

An earlier report from PPE.pl suggested a full disc release might come later, possibly in 2027. Take-Two denied that plan, so do not count on a disc version.

Physical vs digital: which should you buy?

Because a used code is tied to your account, the boxed copy loses the main advantage of physical games: you usually cannot trade it in or lend it after redeeming. Buy the box only if your retailer has a better price, you want the case, or you are giving it as a gift.

Will a PS5 Digital Edition or Series S work with the boxed copy?

Yes. Since the box contains a code and not a disc, it works on the PS5 Digital Edition and the disc-less Xbox Series S, as long as you buy the correct platform version (PlayStation or Xbox).
