To turn on two-step verification for your Xbox account, sign in at account.microsoft.com/security, select Manage how I sign in, and choose Turn on under Two-step verification. Your Xbox account is your Microsoft account, so this protects your games, gift card balance, and saved payment methods.

After it is on, you will need a security code from your email, phone, or an authenticator app when you sign in on a device Microsoft does not trust yet.

Turn on two-step verification

  1. Go to the Security tab of your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com/security and sign in.
  2. Select Manage how I sign in.
  3. Under Additional security and Two-step verification, choose Turn on.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps. If you set up the Microsoft Authenticator app, you will scan a QR code with your phone.

The same screen has Turn off if you ever need to undo it.

Add backup contact methods first

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that locks them out. Microsoft says that with two-step verification on, you always need two forms of ID. If you lose your phone, your password alone will not get you back in, and getting access back can take 30 days. You could even lose the account.

Microsoft recommends having three pieces of security info on your account. A good setup:

Method Why
Authenticator app Works without signal; codes come from the app
Main email Easy to reach day to day
Backup email Microsoft suggests a second address just in case

Microsoft also says it is phasing out text-message (SMS) codes for personal accounts, so do not rely on a phone number alone.

What changes after you turn it on

  • You get a security code each time you sign in on a device that is not trusted.
  • Resetting a forgotten password needs two codes instead of one.
  • Some older apps and devices, like the Xbox 360, cannot use security codes. For those, you create an app password in the App passwords section of your account’s Advanced security options.

Why do this before a big launch

Launch weeks bring a lot of new sign-ins, new consoles, and fake “free code” offers. Two-step verification makes it much harder for someone who gets your password to buy things or change your account. Microsoft also notes that its support agents are not allowed to send password reset links, so treat any message that offers one as a scam. Once your account is safe, check our GTA 6 release time guide and preload guide.

FAQ

Is my Xbox account the same as my Microsoft account?

Yes. Xbox uses your Microsoft account, so turning on two-step verification at account.microsoft.com protects your Xbox sign-in too.

What if I lose my phone?

You need another verified contact method. Microsoft says recovery without one can take 30 days, so add three pieces of security info.

Will I have to enter a code every time I play?

No. Microsoft asks for a code when you sign in on a device that isn’t trusted.

Why does my old device say my password is wrong?

Some apps and devices, like the Xbox 360, cannot use security codes. Create an app password for them.
