Xbox Series X vs Series S for GTA 6: Which Is Better?

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, so either console can play it. The Series X has more processing power (12 vs 4 teraflops), a higher gaming resolution target (4K vs 1440p), a disc drive, and 1TB of storage. The Series S is smaller and cheaper, but the base model has only 512GB and no disc drive.

Rockstar has not published per-console performance details for GTA 6 that we can confirm, so this guide sticks to Microsoft’s official specs. We do not guess at frame rates.

Storage is the real issue for GTA 6

Microsoft notes that you never get the full drive size for games, because some space is kept for the system. On a 512GB Series S, that leaves much less room than the label says. Big open-world games eat that fast. Check our GTA 6 file size guide for the latest confirmed download size.

Games built for Xbox Series X|S must run from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. A cheaper USB drive can store them, but cannot play them. That means a Series S owner who runs out of space has two choices: uninstall other games or buy an expansion card.

Disc vs digital

The Series S cannot play discs. If you plan to buy a boxed copy of GTA 6, you need the Series X. If you pre-ordered digitally, either console works. See our GTA 6 preload guide to get the download done early.

Which should you buy?

  • Pick Series X if you have a 4K TV, want physical discs, or keep many big games installed at once.
  • Pick Series S if you play on a 1080p or 1440p screen, buy digital, and keep only a few games installed.
  • Already own a Series S? You do not need to upgrade just to play GTA 6. Free up space first.

FAQ

Can the Xbox Series S run GTA 6?

Yes. Rockstar lists Xbox Series X|S as a launch platform for GTA 6 on November 19, 2026.

Can I play GTA 6 on Xbox One?

No. Rockstar lists only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for launch.

Is 512GB enough for GTA 6?

It depends on the final download size and what else you have installed. Some of the 512GB is reserved for the system, so expect to uninstall other games or add an expansion card.

Can I put a GTA 6 disc in a Series S?

No. The Series S has no disc drive and only plays digital games.
