To cancel Xbox Game Pass, go to your Microsoft account Subscriptions page on the web, select Manage, then Cancel subscription. On the console, the path is Profile & system > Settings > Account > Subscriptions. Turning off recurring billing stops future charges, and you keep your Game Pass benefits until the end date.

Xbox Support says you can cancel at any time. In some cases you may also get a refund, but not every charge qualifies.

Cancel Game Pass on your Xbox Series X|S

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Subscriptions.
  3. Choose Game Pass and select Cancel subscription.
  4. Follow the steps. If you are eligible, you may be offered a refund.

Cancel Game Pass on the web (phone or PC)

  1. Open the Subscriptions page of your Microsoft account and sign in with the account that bought the subscription.
  2. Find Game Pass and select Manage.
  3. Select Cancel subscription and follow the instructions.
  4. If you qualify for a refund, you will see an option to cancel right away with a refund.

If you see Turn on recurring billing instead of Manage, recurring billing is already off. The subscription will end on the date shown, you will not be charged after that, and you can keep playing until then.

Refund rules in the US

Xbox Support lists two refund rules:

Situation Refund?
You cancel within 30 days of first buying, or before the first renewal (whichever comes first) Yes, through the cancel steps above
You cancel within 30 days after a renewal charge Yes, for the most recent charge, but only once per account for each Xbox subscription product
Subscription came from a prepaid retail code No refund from Microsoft; the store you bought the code from sets the rules
Refund asked for outside these steps Not eligible

Some countries outside the US have extra prorated refund rights. Xbox Support lists them on its cancellation page.

Common problems

  • No cancel button: if you only see options to renew or turn on recurring billing, the subscription is already set to end.
  • Paying for someone else: the owner of the account that has the subscription must sign in and cancel it.
  • Charge but no active subscription: your card may be on another Microsoft account, like someone in your family group. Check each account.
  • Billed by a third party: contact that company about canceling.
  • Price change: Microsoft says it will tell you at least 30 days before a new price starts, so you can cancel first.

Check your other subscriptions too

The same Subscriptions list shows other subscriptions on your account. If you pre-ordered games digitally, it is worth checking for trial memberships that renew on their own. Our guide to GTA 6 Online at launch covers what is known so far about online play.

FAQ

Do I lose Game Pass right away when I cancel?

No. Turning off recurring billing stops future charges, and you keep the benefits until the expiration date, unless you choose to cancel immediately with a refund.

Can I get a refund for Game Pass?

Possibly. Xbox Support allows a refund within 30 days of first purchase or before the first renewal, and a one-time refund of the latest renewal if you cancel within 30 days of that charge.

Why can’t I find the Cancel button?

If you see Turn on recurring billing instead, the subscription is already set to expire and will not charge you again.

Can I cancel Game Pass for my kid’s account?

The person who owns the account with the subscription must sign in to cancel it, even if your card pays for it.
