Does GTA 6 Have Online Multiplayer at Launch? What Rockstar Confirmed
No, GTA 6 will not have online multiplayer at launch. Rockstar has said the version releasing on November 19, 2026 will “feature a single player experience”. There is no GTA 6 Online mode on day one, and Rockstar has not announced when an online mode will arrive.
What Rockstar has confirmed
- GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- The launch version is a single-player game, following Jason and Lucia across the state of Leonida.
- No date or details have been given for any online mode.
Will there be a GTA 6 Online later?
Very likely, but it is not confirmed. With GTA 5, Rockstar released the story game first in September 2013 and launched GTA Online about two weeks later, in October 2013. GTA Online then became one of the most successful online games ever. With Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Online arrived as a beta about a month after launch. Based on that history, an online mode for GTA 6 is expected at some point, but anyone giving you a date right now is guessing.
What happens to GTA Online (GTA 5)?
GTA Online on GTA 5 is still running. Rockstar is even offering a free month of GTA+, its GTA Online subscription, with digital GTA 6 pre-orders. That suggests GTA Online will keep going alongside GTA 6, at least for now. See our pre-order bonus guide for what GTA+ includes.
Do you need PS Plus or Game Pass Core to play GTA 6?
For a single-player game, you normally do not need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core/Essential to play. You will need an internet connection to download the game, since even boxed copies contain only a download code. Rockstar has not said whether GTA 6 needs to be online to start. We will update this page if that changes.
Can you play GTA 6 co-op with friends?
No co-op or multiplayer features have been announced for the launch version. The story is built around two playable characters, Jason and Lucia, but both are played by you in single player.
