Roblox Parental Controls: How to Set Them Up

The best way to set up Roblox parental controls is to link your own parent account to your child’s account. From your child’s account, go to Settings > Parental Controls > Add parent, then verify that you are an adult and tap Agree. Once linked, you can manage screen time, spending limits, chat, and which games your child can play from your own device.

Roblox has changed its family setup several times. This guide uses Roblox’s official pages as of October 2026, including its May 20, 2026 update on Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts.

Step 1: Create or use a parent account

  1. Create a Roblox account for yourself, or log in to one you already have.
  2. Enter your birthday and verify your age. You must be 18 or older. Roblox lists a government-issued ID or a credit card as verification options, and its help pages also mention facial age estimation.

Roblox recommends a separate parent account so you do not need to log in to your child’s account to change settings.

Step 2: Link to your child’s account

From your child’s account:

  1. Open Settings. On a computer, click the gear icon in the top right. On mobile, tap More, then Settings.
  2. Go to Parental Controls and select Add parent.
  3. Your child enters your email address, and Roblox sends you a link.
  4. Open the email, choose Create account or Use existing account, and verify your age.
  5. When the page refreshes, select Agree to link.

The email on your Roblox account must match the email that received the invite.

Step 3: Choose your settings

Control What it does
Content maturity A slider sets the highest game rating your child can play.
Block / allow games Block specific games, or approve or deny your child’s game requests.
Chat Turn Experience Chat and Direct chat on or off, and choose who can chat or voice chat with your child.
Spending limits Set a monthly limit and pick spend notifications.
Screen time Set daily limits (for Kids accounts and Select users ages 9 to 12).
Connections View, block, and report your child’s connections.
Private servers, inventory, trading Limit who can join, see items, or trade.

Roblox also lets linked parents check or update a child’s birthday, which matters because chat now depends on age.

Understand Roblox Kids and Roblox Select

In May 2026, Roblox announced new account types, with a global rollout starting in early June 2026:

  • Roblox Kids (ages 5 to 8): all chat is off by default. A linked parent can allow in-game chat where available. Games are limited to Minimal or Mild ratings.
  • Roblox Select (ages 9 to 15): games rated Minimal, Mild, or Moderate. Chat depends on age and region.
  • Roblox (16+): age-checked users get the full experience except Restricted (18+) games.

Roblox says users who have not completed an age check cannot chat, no matter their age.

No parent account? Use the child’s device

Roblox also offers a simpler option: approve requests or set a Parent PIN directly on your child’s device, without creating a separate account. A linked account gives you more control from your own phone.

How to unlink

Go to Settings > Parental Controls, select your child, tap the pencil icon, and choose Unlink accounts. After unlinking, you can no longer approve actions or set limits.

Kids love chasing in-game rewards. If your child asks about codes, our pages like What If Disasters codes only list codes typed inside the game, never anything that needs a password.

FAQ

Do I need a Roblox account to use parental controls?

Not always. Roblox says you can approve requests or set a Parent PIN on your child’s device. A linked parent account lets you manage settings from your own device.

How do I verify my age as a parent?

Roblox lists a government-issued ID or a credit card for parent accounts, and its parental controls page also mentions facial age estimation.

Can I set a monthly spending limit?

Yes. Linked parents can set a monthly spending limit and choose notifications for all transactions, high spending, or none.

Can my child chat without an age check?

No. Roblox says users who have not completed an age check cannot chat, regardless of age.
