How the Criminal Profile and Heat System Work in GTA 6

Update: based on Rockstar’s interview in Edge magazine, published October 29, 2026.

GTA 6 has two systems that change how crime plays out. The Criminal Profile rates how Jason and Lucia commit crimes, from “Professional” to “Irredeemable”, and it can affect the story. The heat system tracks what police know about you, like your clothes, your partner and your weapon. Here is what Rockstar has officially confirmed, and what is still only reported.

What is the Criminal Profile?

In its Edge cover story, Rockstar North confirmed that GTA 6 tracks your behavior on a scale from Professional to Irredeemable, shown with angel and devil icons. Rockstar says the profile influences how Jason and Lucia’s story develops.

Edge’s feature also notes you can sometimes intimidate or incapacitate people instead of using lethal force, which suggests cleaner, more controlled crimes push you toward the Professional end. Rockstar has not published an exact list of what raises or lowers the score.

Can the Criminal Profile break for good?

This part is not confirmed by Rockstar. In August 2026, GTA YouTuber The Gaming Gorilla said after a hands-off preview that the profile can “shatter” if it drops low enough and stay that way for the rest of the playthrough. Edge did not mention this, so treat it as unconfirmed until launch.

The relationship scale

Separate from the Criminal Profile, Jason and Lucia’s closeness is tracked on a four-point scale. Rockstar says it grows as they spend time together, and your choices can influence both the relationship and their criminal behavior.

How the heat system works

Instead of police knowing exactly where you are the moment a crime happens, GTA 6 tracks what they know about you:

What police track What should help (based on Rockstar’s description)
Physical description Get out of sight
Your partner (Jason or Lucia) Split up
Clothing Change clothes
Weapon Drop or hide it
CCTV footage Avoid cameras

Rockstar also says there is some latitude before your behavior triggers a wanted level, so not every small mistake brings the police.

What the police can do

  • Officers radio each other with your description.
  • They lay stinger strips and use helicopter searchlights.
  • A K-9 unit (a police dog) can chase you on foot.
  • Stolen cars may have trackers, and some owners call in reports. See how car theft works in GTA 6.

Pedestrians react too

Holding a gun in your hands worries people more than carrying it over your shoulder, and some pedestrians will challenge you instead of running. Robbery victims and shoppers may fight back, so plans can go wrong fast.

Quick tips for launch day

  • Change outfits after a job if you are being searched for.
  • Do not walk around with a weapon in hand in busy areas.
  • Use your partner switch to split up when heat is high.
  • Avoid obvious CCTV spots like store fronts during robberies.

These follow directly from the systems Rockstar described. We will update this guide with exact numbers once the game is out on November 19.

FAQ

Does GTA 6 have an honor system like Red Dead 2?

Sort of. The Criminal Profile tracks your behavior from Professional to Irredeemable and affects the story, similar in spirit to Red Dead Redemption 2’s honor.

Is there still a wanted level in GTA 6?

Yes. Rockstar says there is some leeway before a wanted level triggers, and the heat system decides how easily police recognize you.

Can a low Criminal Profile ruin my save?

Rockstar has not said so. A YouTuber reported the profile can break permanently in a playthrough, but that is unconfirmed.
